OUR HISTORY

What began as an opportunity to bring the immensely popular sport of football to the Guyanese football fans in Brooklyn New York. Has evolved and expanded to a Guyanese network all over the United States.

Dedicated to offering our members and supporters the best possible experience, we have proudly been at the forefront of Guyanese football for over 4 decades while still maintaining that familiar neighborhood feeling.

Our story started in the late 1960s when a number of Guyanese migrated to the United States that were original members of a Guyanese youth team called St Sidwells Rovers.  The under 16 team of St. Sidwells Rovers comprised of players like Richard Hing, Michael Pearce, Casa Neblett, Terry Sutherland, Ferdinand (Starrie)  Hodge, Stanley Harmon, Phillip Daniels, Leonard Gibson, and Terrance Vyfhuis to name a few.

The senior team consisted of the following players that formed the nucleus of Blackpool. The late Compton Burkett, Milroy Wrong, Kenneth Campbell, Cecil Chester, and Bayard Boyce Peters.

In 1970 most Guyanese players met at Pratt Institute ground in Brooklyn New York to practice. It wasn't  until 1971 that the group decided to get organized and register a team in the North American League under the name Rovers. At the team registration time we found out that the name Rovers was banned from the league.  Upon hearing of the ban, the team was renamed to Blackpool Soccer Club. The Blackpool name was derived out of a Soft Shoe league in Guyana in the early 1960s.

After the North American Soccer League and other leagues within the New York Metropolitan area (Italian Football League, Greek American Soccer League etc.) merged to form the Cosmopolitan Soccer League with only a selected few teams chosen from each merging leagues. Blackpool entered the new league and was assigned to the 3rd division. During our tenure in the league, Blackpool won:

  1. 1980 – 1981 2nd Division South Fairness Cup

  2. 1980 - 1981 2nd Division South Champions

  3. 1986 - 1987 3rd Division  Champions

  4. 1990 – 1991 “B” Division Champions

In 1985 Blackpool Soccer club was renamed Guyana Veterans Soccer club.  Founders of the Guyana Veterans Soccer club were:

  1. Compton Burkett

  2. Cosmo Layne

  3. Amos “Goose” Jackson

  4. Jackie Maxwell
